Papathanasis Addresses Economic Concerns and Housing Scheme Impact
In a recent interview with Action24, Deputy Minister of National Economy and Finance Nikos Papathanasis addressed several pressing economic issues facing Greece, including rising prices and the ongoing housing crisis. He acknowledged that increasing prices are significantly impacting household incomes, stating, "High prices are eating away at incomes." Despite these challenges, Papathanasis noted that Greece's purchasing power has improved in recent years, positioning the country better compared to others in Europe.
Papathanasis emphasized that while Greece is not at the top or bottom of the purchasing power rankings, there has been progress. He expressed the government's desire to continue improving this situation, stating, "We want to do even better. This is not enough for us."

The deputy minister highlighted that Greece's economic growth rate is currently more than double the European average, which he believes will contribute to a continued decline in unemployment rates. When asked about the housing crisis, Papathanasis responded to a report from Kathimerini that claimed the 'My Home' scheme had led to a 30% increase in property prices. He firmly rejected this assertion, arguing that the scheme has enabled 24,000 families to purchase homes and that these beneficiaries are now paying lower monthly mortgage payments than they previously did in rent.
Future Housing Initiatives Aim to Alleviate Economic Pressures
Looking ahead, Papathanasis mentioned that an additional 15,000 families would have the opportunity to buy homes through the upcoming 'My Home 3' program. He also indicated that the 'Renovate' program is set to launch soon, which aims to further assist families in securing housing.
While acknowledging that not all government measures yield immediate results, he argued that the gradual implementation of various initiatives is essential for addressing the housing crisis. Papathanasis concluded by reiterating the complexity of economic challenges, stating, "Anyone who says that high prices can be solved with a magic wand is lying."
